My 5-minute makeup routine

I used to be pretty ambivalent about makeup. My mum was never a huge makeup wearer, and we were definitely brought up to believe that what counts is on the inside, which is totally true. But it’s also super fun to play around with makeup and try different looks, and especially in this image-driven world of ours, makeup is a useful tool to boost confidence, find identity and just have fun.

I recently found out that Jeremy Renner, who of course plays Hawkeye in the Avengers film franchise (watch out for Civil War coming out next year!) used to be a makeup artist. There’s this great interview with Ellen de Generes, on Ellen, where she asks him about his past and what he would recommend for the layperson’s basic beauty essentials.

“Eyebrows, lashes, lips. Frame the face,” he says without skipping a beat.

With this in mind, my 5 minute makeup routine focuses on these three elements. I start with a basic BB cream – I love Maybelline’s Dream Fresh BB cream in Light, which is available in pharmacies and most supermarkets – then layer on a little concealer under the eyes and on any problem areas. At the moment I’m using Rimmel’s Wake Me Up concealer in Classic Beige. Sometimes I use a brush, most often I just use my fingers, because I’m lazy and I have five minutes because I have to be out the door five minutes ago and oh my god what is even life.

Then I go from the top down: eyebrows first. I love a good fierce brow and I’ve worked on being able to do my brows in a short amount of time, but you can also just use a pencil and a spooly to brush your brows into your preferred shape. You use your five minutes however you want. I use Benefit’s Brow Zing for my brows.

For lashes, I’m in love with Benefit’s They’re Real! lengthening mascara. My eyes are kinda sensitive and anything that flakes off irritates me no end. This is the best mascara I’ve ever used. The only problem is that it’s hard to get off, even with the matching remover cream Benefit has. If anyone has a great eye makeup remover they recommend, put it in comments!

My favourite lip product at the moment is Revlon Colorburst balm stain in Sweetheart Valentine. It’s like a lip balm, so it’s not super drying on my lips, and it’s easy to apply and not mess up, which is what I like.

As I mentioned above, I like to focus on my brows and I like an easy to apply lip that’s not too dry. You may prefer to focus more on a really smooth face or add some eyeliner or shadow. Or maybe you’re faster than me, and you can do more with your five minutes. I wear this most days when I’m out of the house. It’s easy, it looks good and it’s a bit of fun. Let us know in the comments what your favourite products are for your five minute make up look, and maybe we’ll do a review in the future.
